There’s fears a woman may have suffered brain damage as a result of a routine surgery.
It happened on Friday when the woman went in for, what Nine News reports was, a standard gynaecological procedure at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital, in the inner-northeastern Perth suburb of Mt Lawley.
During the operation it’s understood a surgeon cut into an artery, resulting in massive blood loss, with the woman transferred to Royal Perth Hospital for an emergency transfusion.
St John of God Mt Lawley chief executive Vanessa Unwin confirmed “a clinical incident” had occurred, “resulting in an adverse outcome for a patient”.
“We advised the family immediately,” Ms Unwin said in a statement. “It is clearly a difficult time for them and we remain in contact.
“Patient safety is our highest priority. We treat incidents with the utmost seriousness and will undertake a full investigation.”
Nine reports the family now has concerns the woman affected may have suffered brain damage as a result of the blood loss.
It’s the second serious surgical incident at a St John of God hospital in Perth in three weeks.
A man, aged in his 60s, suffered severe burns following a fire breaking out in an operating theatre at St John of God Subiaco Hospital on February 14.
That matter is also being investigated.
